I accept that no one will ever let me call this a quote-unquote good movie, but the rest of the world is going to have to accept my sober insistence that this is a one-of-a- kind genre occurrence, and even for that alone it deserves respect. You want to tell this guy I’m wrong to love his movie? Go right the damn hell ahead.

If I’m being completely honest, I love this movie way more than I love most conventionally accepted “classic films.” Given the choice, I’d opt without hesitation to watch this movie over CITIZEN KANE, CASABLANCA, and even THE GODFATHER. THE LAST DRAGON is a kid’s movie, but one of the few I will still watch from time to time because it’s guaranteed to lift my mood. If a movie’s intention feels genuine to me, then my affection for it is genuine. I tend to take the movies I like in the spirit they were intended. I thinks the story would have been better if they had Raya lose in the spine battle and the dragon not appearing to have a low point scene, rather than an action scene with no purpose plotwise other than frustrating her rival and revealing the dragon. The dragon does receive character growth, even after almost dying. The beautiful environments aren't developed and explored for time's sake. Raya's naivete at the beginning feels fake. After 5 minutes of introduction to the side characters, they're in the background for the rest of the film. The characters are interesting but underdeveloped.
